Hinton St. Mary is a hamlet on the Stour about 15 miles from it's source. The mill here can have changed little since William Barnes, the Dorset poet, came here to play in his boyhood, from his home just across the fields. The history of the village dates back to Roman times as this detail from a mosaic pavement found at Hinton proves. Today the village has a fine Manor House and church which stand side by side. It was completely rebuilt in the 17th Century.
