A thousand years ago the Saxon word for wood was holt, so Holt built around a large and pleasant village green, near Wimborne, has never changed its name. Nearby is God's Blessing Green, and Pig Oak, though neither has much to show for there strange titles. The area of Holt Forest was once well known. It was laid down during the reign of Edward I as extending between Mannington, Horton, Uddens and Holt.
